When Should Flash be Used?
Flash has come a very long way from its inception as a simple web animation tool. It can be used as the entire foundation of a website, can help create small animated pieces for your web pages, or can help you develop a Rich Internet Application capable of melding fluid design with dynamic/database driven content.
There are, however, considerations that should be made when deciding to use Flash in a website. Will Flash help you communicate your message?
Keeping your audience’s perspective in mind at all times is critical. You need to ask yourself if Flash will intrigue them or annoy them. Will it get in the way of reaching your visitor? If a subtle animation will enhance their experience then flash may be appropriate and should be considered.
Will the additional load time be acceptable?
If the animation you are adding has a large file size and is created improperly, it could add considerable time to the loading of the page. By optimizing the images of your animation or incorporating a buffer, you can decrease the file size of your Flash file. In the final analysis, you have to weigh the importance of the animation to the site with any inconvenience the load time may add.
Will the animation use bitmaps or vector images?
Flash is most optimal in terms of file size when vector images are used. Since vector images are created with simple lines and area fills, it doesn’t require nearly the space that a bitmap image would consume. Consequently, your file size will remain small and your animations won’t require additional processing power.
Will the site need to be indexed by search engines?
Although the spidering of Flash sites by search engines has gotten better, there are still deficiencies in the process and many aspects of a Flash site get overlooked by search engines. If a high search engine ranking is important to your client, then perhaps a site built entirely in Flash is not the way to go. Although meta tags and page title tags can be filled to meet some search engine optimization standards, text links, alt tags, and body text are elements that will go unaddressed. These are important factors in the optimization mix and without then, you handicap your chances of a decent ranking.
Will my audience be able to view Flash?
This is certainly becoming less and less of an issue with the Flash 8 plug-in boasting a 98% proliferation number among current internet users. You do, however, have to take a hard look at your target audience. If the majority of them are still running Windows 98, Flash may not be the way to go. This question is best answered after you analyze your target market.
It’s important to do as much research on your target audience as possible when deciding on the best platform for your website – HTML or Flash. As you can see, using Flash is not always the best approach but in the right setting, it is an engaging and powerful medium that can bring your website to life and set you apart from your competition.
